Tribal designs mixed with graphic design and photography are my favorite as far as techniques to combine for my work. Although, tribal designs are the root of my artistry. The reason behind this is my own upbringing in the Samala Chumash tribe of Santa Ynez, CA. This art style awakens the spirit of my work while simultaneously paying tribute to the artistry of my ancestors.
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration from nature, indigenous stories, and emotions of the heart. Whatever can’t be expressed through song is usually expressed through my art work. Depending on what I’m designing, I can convey a variety of emotions through the various elements that make up the whole art piece.
What would you do with $25,000?I would donate the proceeds to the nonprofits I sit on the board for. Both provide opportunities to the creatives of my community, and I believe in artists uplifting artists. I understand that this award money is meant to benefit the artist that wins, however, artists don’t become successful on their own, and by donating the proceeds to the nonprofits I serve, I can help more people like myself. Artists who just need a chance to shine.
