Painting for me is like breathing I can’t really live without it I used to say that as a kid and now at 41 years old I still do.

The medium I’m most in love with is oil painting. I’ve gone down two roads—impressionism and realism—and I love mixing the two. I’m a big fan of draftsmanship and technical skill, inspired by Leonardo and Rembrandt, which pushed me toward realism early. Then I discovered post-impressionism and everything changed. Monet still does things I can’t fully grasp. I aim to blend strong proportions with expressive paint, creating a balance of realism and impression.
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration and willpower through my children—their love drives me. I’m inspired by music—Coltrane, Bill Evans, Miles, and Sonny Clark. Music is essential to my painting process and helps me reach a flow state. I also find inspiration in life, through both hard times and good times, and in nature. My sunflower paintings, for example, come from seeds I grew myself.
What would you do with $25,000?I’d use the money to support my kids first—starting a college fund for both and setting some aside for my son’s first car (he’s 14 now). I’d also invest in my growth by attending the Watts Atelier of the Arts in San Diego. Jeff Watts offers a two-week in-person boot camp I’d love to attend to improve my draftsmanship. My goal is to become a master painter, and learning from him would be a dream.
