Over the last 2 decades I’ve worked to perfect a mixed media technique that places sculpture on portraits, combining my two favorite mediums. The process of creation literally brings the story off of the canvas. It’s not just a 3D trick, it is the art reaching out to the viewer.
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration in people’s need for honesty even if it’s not verbalized. I find inspiration in the stories we don’t often have the room, the opportunity, or the safe space to express. Art not only gives a voice but it speaks across cultures. This connection inspires me but also leaves me with a sense of responsibility.
What would you do with $25,000?As I embark on the 7th decade of life, I am determined to complete endeavors I've put on hold to raise my children, my grandchildren, and community children. I have a children’s book I’ve illustrated over 30 years ago that I aim to publish. I have an art degree that I am determined to complete. I have a home I am determined to purchase for my work and my family. This award will help me build my own life and create my own stories so I can pour into my family and community from a fulfilled cup.
