As an artist that works with multiple mediums, it is incredibly hard to nail down a favorite. That said, it would have to be the theater. Theater combines every artform and brings it to life. In a world where human art is being devalued, a live experience means the world. Set design, lighting, music, the script, the actors bodies and voices all come together to create magic. Theater brings multiple artforms, artists, and communities together, and that's what makes it incredible.
Where do you find inspiration?As an Indigenous artist, I grew up being told that no matter what I did, I needed to give back to my community. This teaching has always fueled me. When I create art, I create with intention. Intention that it will reach the people it needs to reach. Whether it's some rezzy kid, an elder, even non native people. I want to make art that inspires people to live beautifully and artistically. A sort of feedback loop that echoes throughout humanity.
What would you do with $25,000?I'm currently working on a documentary on the Nez Perce trail with the Nez Perce Appaloosa horse club. I plan on riding with them through several areas and hearing the stories our ancestors went through while running away from the US army. It's not just about what happened to our people, but how we connect to our ancestors, the land, and our horses when we go out to these ancient trails. The $25k would go to paying my cast and crew, insurance, and any equipment rentals.
