Although I have been primarily an abstract artist, I recently started doing portrait art. My work connects me to culture and nature.

I paint mostly abstract pieces. Because I paint almost entirely outdoors, I am inspired by nature which is all around me. In the past year, my attention has been drawn to painting birds in my area of deep South Texas. This initial foray into painting small creatures, has led me to paint my first portrait. For her 90th year celebration, I painted my mother as she appeared circa her 15th birthday. Although the painting may be lacking depth and dimension, it is meant as an homage to my mother.
Where do you find inspiration?Nature is the key inspiration to the majority of my work. The lushness of the sub-tropical environment of Brownsville, Texas has created fertile ground for natural diversity and beauty. Living in the border-land where biculturalism is the norm, has provided points of reference from my upbringing which permeates my work.
What would you do with $25,000?I would like to pursue formal education to expand my portrait-painting skills. I would also like to travel throughout Mexico and Latin America to learn from and be inspired by other artists.
