Ana Rodriguez

I grew up in a damaged household and creating art helped me make a sense of the world around me and empowered the voice I never knew I had.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

I love to create paintings that reflect elements of pattern and design, memory, and color. I incorporate playful gesture painting that seems messy yet ordered, decorative/tacky, and hopefully resonates how the viewer associates memory with color and pattern. I love looking at family photographs pay close attention to pattern from furniture, dresses, fabrics, wall paper, and any objects used for ritual (cakes, bows, table cloths, and any form of party/birthday/religious decorations.

Where do you find inspiration?

My inspiration comes from memory, family photo albums, my family who were sarape makers, seamstresses, tile makers, and wood carvers. I’m inspired by the memory of my grandfathers home in Tijuana and the patterning on the floors, colorful wall decorations of floral prints, and the amount of color and pattern from furniture, curtains, bedsheets, and colorful sarapes that adorned his home. In my mind I keep memory through color, pattern, and decoration. It’s my history, past, and future

What would you do with $25,000?

I would buy vintage sarapes from my families hometown of Teocaltiche Jalisco. I would like to take a class to learn how to Make sarapes, restore my mother’s embroidered table clothes, buy books from multiple cultures and learn about their history of pattern and decoration in the home. I would really like to visit my families hometown where the birth of the sarape was created and learn from the sarape makers there. I would like to record their story and collaborate with them to make art
