What is your favorite type of art to create?

I love world-building, channeling myth and history into contemporary art that sparks dialogue about contested perceptions of Black people and other marginalized groups around the world. As an image hunter I document provocative African Diaspora journeys across time and geography. My work raises important questions that help build a communal discourse in conversation with artists, activists, and grassroots organizations including my own nonprofit organization Books to Brushes.

Where do you find inspiration?

As a history major at Spelman College much of my work is inspired by the stories of marginalized people the world over. I layer historical realities,Afro futurism, my own lucid-dreams and memoir-style writing to infuse and inspire my mixed media work. My Gris-Gris Gurlz Series,(Gris-Gris doll image in gallery) is both original stories/poems/prose, sculptures, moving collages and large installations to tell the sci-fi stories of the Gris Gris Gurlz’ mission to “Change the Future of the Future.”

What would you do with $25,000?

I intend to continue creating mixed-media memoir entitled Raised to Riot. This memoir-installation layers my personal stories as a child taking on the mission of my father Randall Robinson and his nonprofit organization, TransAfrica. My parents’ nonprofit was instrumental in freeing Nelson Mandela from prison. As early as five,I believed it my mission to follow in the storied footsteps of my family.I would continue the memoir and provide public arts programming via my non-profit Book to Brushes.
