Anthony Mikkelson

It’s a way to communicate; to make real what’s in my head, and to say what’s in my heart about experience that’s hard to entangle in words.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

I’ve been working on a comic book series for a while, waiting until the writing is done before I publish. The narrative is about the years I spent working for an ambulance company as an EMT in Milwaukee. I like storytelling and sequential image so I’m drawn to comic books and graphic novels. The images I make are a mix of drawings, paintings, and woodblock prints. I used to draw 2D animations but I’ve always loved the comic book form as something to collect and hold onto.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration in work, relationships, histories, politics, and the landscape. Growing up in Milwaukee, Lake Michigan was a place to escape, have fun, reflect, and take your girlfriend. That horizon inspired me greatly. I’ve spent over 10 years in Dallas. I still miss the lake but I’m interested in the people here and I like having the Chihuahuan Desert as a place to detach and reflect. My work attempts to relate experience, from war to the existential, and put that into painting.

What would you do with $25,000?

I do road trips to document and collect reference images by making watercolors, taking photos, and make drawings, these funds will help with the costs of travel and lodging. As I draw the comic, I will need to pay models and buy supplies. I make paintings by purchasing the lumber, the canvas, and the paints. These I use to paint the comic book frames. I will need to pay for printing press time. And in the end, I will have to pay for publishing.
