I love to create because I can make a world with rules of my own. Feeling boxed in from pressures of life, I feel purpose in making art.

I produce a lot of photography, but I love ceramics in a special way. While in my bachelor’s program of arts, ceramics was my magic material. Forming the material from scratch, felt rewarding when it comes out different/new. It’s so versatile. If I could go back to do it over, I have so many ideas to create. Pottery also provided a sort of therapy for me by being present instead of my usual worry. I dream of one day teaching at my own ceramic studio with a darkroom in the back for photography.
Where do you find inspiration?I find a lot of inspiration from life, trying to capture its beauty in the lens from those little moments that pass us by. When creating art in college, I was able to dig deeper finding inspiration from within; self reflection, personal heartache, longing and internal shame. I began to use art as an analysis of my true opinions and identity as a biracial child trying to find her place in the world . I love to draw inspiration from other artists to relate to who I am through my art.
What would you do with $25,000?Winning a prize like this could give me a starting point to forming my own art studio. I love sharing my love and knowledge of art with others. Making my own space will make it possible for me to make/teach art full time and give back to the art community in town. I’d start saving for my partner’s and my future. I previously convinced myself that my dreams were too far out of reach and I’ll always have to settle. Now I’m ready to begin my journey to achieve a career that I’ve always dreamed of.
