I love portraits, specifically done with either charcoal or soft pastels. I enjoy mixing the inner human anatomy with what we see on the outside. One of my favorite pieces is 2 charcoal portraits of women with skulls replacing their faces, revealing bones we never get to see until after death. Memento mori, the reminder that one day we will all pass away. That at our core we are all the same, comprised of bones and muscle and tissue.
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration in the love shared around me. When I find myself stuck in an “artist’s block” I find it helpful to step away and go outside for as long as I need to. The Earth and nature is one thing us humans cannot create as precisely or as chaotically. No blade will match the sharpness of a bee’s stinger, and no beauty could we create that could compare to the Earth.
What would you do with $25,000?I have a year left in college and my scholarship funds run out this semester. I would use the money to pay off my last year, pay off a portion of my car, put away some towards my credit cards (it’s hard being a college student), and put some in my savings. It’s not glamorous, but neither is life.
