Painting allows me to slow down and fall into a meditative state were I find clarity through the times when life's chaos feels overwhelming.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
Painting on a variety of surfaces, such as wood, seashells, stones, and canvas with acrylic-based paint is my preferred creative medium. Having grown up in rural Nova Scotia, I appreciated the low barrier to entry, as many alternative methods of self expression where not available to me. The forgiveness that acrylic paint provides helps me to create layers and make adjustments to work with the surface that I am painting, and further teach myself how to adapt to its ever-changing intricacies.
Where do you find inspiration?I find my inspiration in the details that others seem to overlook. When I see a hint of colour or an unexpected texture, almost hidden within my subject, I feel compelled to share it as a reflection of the beauty that peaks through even the darkest days. This emotion is something that cannot be expressed with words. So, I highlight the intricate details of the world around me to share the colours of life when all else feels grey.
What would you do with $25,000?Should I win the $25,000, I will first make donation of $1,000 to Feed Nova Scotia, who provides food to Nova Scotians in need. I will also donate $1,000 Alice House, who supports women and children impacted by domestic violence. To my Grandmother Diane and Great-Aunt Chucky, I will gift them $1,000 each as a small thank-you for raising me with tremendous support and love. The remainder of the prize will be set aside to support myself and my family, with some set aside for new paint supplies.
