Portraits are my favourite things to make. I feel it’s a chance for me to explore the depth of a someone’s lived experience, emotions, or social issues through a lens that the viewer can find understanding and empathy in.
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration from people I encounter everyday. Despite the vast divide between us and strangers on the street, we all have felt joy, pain, anger and sorrow. I love hearing people’s stories and using those emotions as a catalyst behind my work. I’m also drawn to old things, particularly antiques and toys. I find these objects visually stimulating, as well evocative of nostalgic feelings, despite being from a time long past.
What would you do with $25,000?I would be able to afford a studio space where I could focus on larger works and devote more time towards my craft. It’s a dream of mine to work in the arts full-time, and this would be an opportunity to take a big step towards that goal. I will be creating for the rest of my life, however it’s often difficult to juggle a day job, rent and the cost of materials. I would love the opportunity to have a space I can dedicate to my dream.
