Carla Munoz

Growing up there wasn’t any positive Native American representation, nor was it ever highlighting California culture. We are still here!!

What is your favorite type of art to create?

My favorite to create is my shell jewelry. I collect and repurpose as I ancestors did before me, starting with an offering. The regalia I create reflects our culture. Oil painting allows me to showcase who we are in relation to the natural world. All my paintings are as colorful as our California Native Culture

Where do you find inspiration?

My inspiration comes from growing up in ceremony. Understanding our resiliency, and reclamation of our identity. Art has always been my release through life’s woos and I hope to inspire the next generation to utilize their same passion.

What would you do with $25,000?

If I was awarded the $$$ I would expand my jewelry collection. Photograph gifted pieces worn by respected elders and community members. I would host a few workshops for our tribal youth to give them tangible culture through traditional arts. Taking a trip to Monterey our homelands, as we are displaced to Southern California, to collect shells for regalia. Which to our youth will become cultural identifiers.
