I am an Expressionist animal artist, and work in both acrylic and soft pastel. My emotional response to my subject is my focus over photo reality. Using intensely vibrant, non-naturalistic and clashing color with wild, expressive brushwork, line and mark-making are predominant in my art. After 40 years, I am still on a journey of exploration and revelation. Each painting motivates the next. Each series motivates the next. I am always excited to discover in what direction my work will take me.
Where do you find inspiration?A reporter once wrote about me “Santora is attracted to the pure spirit of animals… No other subject has ever called to her in the same way that animals do.” Two of my passions are creating art and communing with my horses. It is natural for these iconic beings to be the major inspiration and focus of my work. My dogs, other farm animals and select wildlife are also powerful motivators in my artwork.
What would you do with $25,000?I would have to give that serious consideration… most of the income from my artwork goes to care for my horses. A small percentage goes for new supplies… If I won, I would donate some to the animal rescues my horses and dogs came from, and I would purchase some art supplies for a new project… and hold on to the rest for the future art/animal pursuits.
