For me, creation is messy and often brutal, beauty is the foam on the tide I ride in and out on with the moon.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
Choosing a favorite medium is like a naming a favorite child. My mentor, Wally Hedrick taught me not only to think outside The Box, but to create what draws me at the moment of conception—in the Goethean sense. Large abstract layers of pigment, some built over years. Installation. Performance art. Poetry. Film. Five albums written, performed and released. My work refuses a familiar geometry—each piece a doorbell left deliberately a jar—questioning, tantalizing, moving lithely, yet intentionally.
Where do you find inspiration?Dream flight, incandescent light, unruly 6th graders, a 7 year old goldfish, modern masters, ancient philosophers, broken glass, a weeping cherry, unusual chord progressions, a cellist in my sheep pasture, Eraserhead, a 40 ft boom lift, Fermat’s last theorem, Diocletian’s Palace, the casual diversity of Marseille, sea anemone, a good game of chess, The Adriatic, solo travel, watching the sun set 44 times in one day.
What would you do with $25,000?I would use the $25,000 to complete my Jewel series— Each work is a 4” × 4” mixed-media panel — combining paint, photo transfer, and encaustic on wood block — displayed in a 9” × 9” upcycled solid wood ornate gilded frame with the goal of producing 100 pieces. Having recently left my teaching career to pursue art full time, this funding would allow me to fully realize that vision.
