My art is expression, advocacy & joy--I create to express myself as a disabled POC & to bring visibility, awareness and a sense of community
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
I believe in finding the art in broken things. Painting on secondhand mirrors & using other reclaimed materials is my favorite way to create. It allows the viewer to literally see themselves within the art & to contemplate how what others may discard, can still be useful. My art often includes masks, which allow the viewer to think about the masks we often wear in the world, intentionally or unintentionally. The viewer is able to consider how others see us, as well as how we see ourselves.
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration everywhere! In music, nature, folktales, and conversations with others. I also find inspiration in history and architecture, as well as from my own life experiences. Surviving a near-fatal accident which caused several disabilities and chronic conditions is definitely an inspiration for my art that I hope to be able to share with the world. I often find inspiration in community and communal experiences.
What would you do with $25,000?10% off the top would be donated. I would also like to bless my family with part of it for the way they’ve helped and supported me after becoming disabled, and in my artistic pursuits. Part of it would definitely go towards living expenses, and I would love to invest in art supplies as well as other opportunities to share my art, including traveling both for inspiration, and for showcasing opportunities. I'd also like to invest in hosting a virtual art show for disabled individuals.
