Images of women dominate my paintings. This relates to my concern about women as the sources of power. My art explores this concern.

My favorite type of art is to create works that blend painting and mixed media to highlight the social conditions of women in my society. Mopping wool is an essential part of my art vocabulary. On the canvas, I treat the mopping wool not as a material of labor but as a material of meaning. By treating the mopping wool as a material of meaning, my art challenges the idea that women belong to the sphere of the domestic.
Where do you find inspiration? The inspiration for my art has always been shaped by two perspectives: my social location in history and society, and the dialogues that this encourages in my audience. As a female artist who spent a long time in Africa before moving to New Jersey, I cannot help but relate to the social and economic conditions of women I encounter in my daily life. I see women are the foundational sources of power in our societies. This is a dialogue that I always share with my audience.
What would you do with $25,000?A cash infusion will enable me to realize the structural shifts that I have always hoped for in my practice. First will be the uninterrupted creative time and space it provides. This will enable me to have a constant schedule of studio time to build on the momentum of my works in progress. It will enable me to experiment with new materials and explore larger-scale mixed-media installations. I will also be able to afford high-quality paints, mixed-media materials, and fees for residencies.
