Making art keeps me sane, whatever that is, art is my refuge from a world I don’t understand and creating keeps me focused and above water.

I love to paint murals. I draw, paint in watercolor, acrylic and oil which is my favorite because of the tactile nature of moving the paint around and into itself. I don’t stick to any static style, depends on the day and vibe. I was told I had ADHD even before I heard the acronym, I am usually working on at least a dozen pieces at once, I do woodcut printmaking which keeps me focused on the processes, design the image, cut the wood, sometimes several layers, ink the plate, print and repeat.
Where do you find inspiration?Inspiration is everywhere, I have 7,500 images on my phone, anything from a vintage poster to a shadow to an oil stain on a street. Music is huge, and museums are especially good when I’m stuck, I can subconsciously pull from every piece I see. But mostly nature, when I was in Wisconsin my work was wolves and loons and forests, now that I’m in the Sonoran desert (which I now know is where I belong) it’s mountains and sky and cactus and rattlesnakes and life in a beautiful but often deadly place.
What would you do with $25,000?To be blunt, pay off some bills so I can make my own art and do less commissions, but I’ll always do public art as long as I can climb a ladder. Next I would do a studio revamp and get some printmaking equipment, upgrade my supplies because even though they say never blame your tools, artists know quality supplies make quality art. Now that’s not to say “better” art, here in the desert there are amazing drawings scratched into ancient boulders with a rock, but good paint and brushes are a luxury
