Creating art makes me feel alive. Sometimes words aren’t enough and I’ve always leaned into my creativity to start or to end a conversation.

I love mixed media assemblage. I find it so satisfying to create something using unconventional and discarded or found objects. When I finally realized that everything was an art supply it was if my creativity was jumpstarted, like I found another gear which was unknown to me. Being a self-taught artist it was like I was set free from the constraints of what I thought an artist was. When that happened I felt unstoppable and that the possibilities for creating art were infinite. I’m liberated.
Where do you find inspiration?I find it all around me. Maybe it’s another artist with a unique perspective that I never thought of or a technique they might be using. It might be some weird object I found that will inspire an entire new piece. Maybe it’s as simple as a conversation I’ve had or maybe just phrase I’ve overheard. Inspiration can come from anywhere at anytime and you may not even realize that until later. Sometimes it can come from just existing in our increasingly distopian society.
What would you do with $25,000?That’s a tough question to honest. I’d like to say I would build a dedicated art space for myself, but that seems selfish. I’ve been working in my garage or in my yard for so long it would be strange to have a studio of my own. Although it would feel amazing knowing that my artwork made that home studio possible. I would still feel conflicted about the other everyday things that the prize money could make a little easier. It would be something to discuss, but an art studio sounds pretty great.
