Cheryl-Ann Hills

I believe all art is an expression of the human experience. For me creating art provides an expressive, meaningful outlet for big emotions.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

Paintings are my current favourite followed by drawings using traditional tools used with my hands and created on canvas, paper and wood. There is something about holding a brush and placing it onto a canvas with paint that is both spiritual and grounding. The eye/hand/heart connection is important to me. I no longer create work that is purely representational, instead I work towards expressing the feeling, the emotion of the scene using abstracted shapes that reflect nature.

Where do you find inspiration?

I am primarily a plein air artist which means I take my art materials outdoors with me on trails and in parks and wilderness areas. When I paint en plein air I have a deeper connection to the subject, the scene in front of me is alive, it moves in the wind. That movement and emotion soaks into me and pours out into the work. I can easily remember each plein air piece I created because it was an experience of connecting deeply with nature.

What would you do with $25,000?

Its not a lot of money these days but it would make a difference to my daughters and their new daughters. I would share most of it with them and take 5k and spend it on myself for a trip to the UK with my paints and brushes. I've always wanted to paint en plein air in the Scottish Highlands. It would be an experience of a lifetime.
