Abstraction is challenging. It is conjuring itself. This is a slow and considered creation of an image. Nothing about this is fast.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
I've always been drawn to abstraction and collage. It's in part from a need to process all the images of modern life. I find abstraction to be the best mode of communication. Where words and representational images falter and fail, abstraction has profound capabilities to connect with the viewer. I work in many layers, building and erasing, redefining and shaping. There is a strong formal element, but I rely heavily on intuition.
Where do you find inspiration? There has also been a strong personal connection to my own life story that is interwoven throughout my work and it's evolution. It's not always super important for me that the viewer need that information to interact and connect with the work, but it moves it forward for me and define chapters. I find inspiration in everything: other artists, play, color pairings observed in daily life, fashion, cartoons. Compositionally, music. I draw from the visual and emotional language of my life.
What would you do with $25,000?While a gut response would be access to natural light, fresh air and taller ceilings; in reality the more immediate needs that are quite expensive in a practice. I would absolutely work towards some improved photographs of the work and to alleviate the preciousness of materials when working. There's a lot of materials that I would like to incorporate but haven't due to cost. Also, I don't have a lot of time available to work, so off-loading some of the work preparing surfaces.
