I have a love of collecting, kitsch and Americana from my parents. Transforming ephemera from the flea market into assemblage seems natural.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
People need to realize that art can be protest. Art can open minds. A picture is worth a thousand words. If my art can shift perception even a fraction, or put a new thought into someone’s head, then I have accomplished my goal. The smallest crack is an opening. Art provokes conversations!
Where do you find inspiration?Assemblage made from the detritus of society gives me a vehicle to express my lifetime of experiences working in mental health. In my professional life, I worked with people society had thrown away: drug abusers, sex offenders, suicidal people, chronically mentally ill, and the homeless. Sifting through discarded objects at flea markets and recontextualizing them into art in my studio, allows me to process my lived experience, and express my political will.
What would you do with $25,000?Assemblage made from the detritus of society gives me a vehicle to express my lifetime of experiences working in mental health. Sifting through discarded objects at flea markets and recontextualizing them into art in my studio, allows me to process my lived experience, and express my political will. With $25,000, I would make a few large scale pieces that I’ve been toying with for years. I would bring forth community involvement and civic scale.
