Cole Justice

I love to create art because it provides control in a world of constant uncertainty and so I can display my emotional perspectives freely.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

My favorite type of art to create is Narrative Surrealism and Visual Reinterpretation. I prefer to work with the 'frozen moments' of our cultural history, iconic scenes from film and sports that exist in the public consciousness as shared memories. My work involves taking these highly recognizable, static frames to create a deliberate, artistic intervention. I usually recast the protagonist or focus point to highlight or emphasize the narrative tone and metaphorical meaning of the piece.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find my inspiration in mass-media imagery and the lessons or metaphorical meaning they provide. I find that most widely known cultural moments carry the strongest metaphorical and tonal weight, reflecting our deepest desires and struggles. My work is inspired and built on these underlying messages, the messages about power, aspiration, and identity that exist in plain sight and we almost all share. The lessons and messages we receive from the world or our culture is where I'm inspired.

What would you do with $25,000?

I would dedicate these funds to purchasing high quality materials and large-scale canvases to push the boundaries of my current work. I would invest in professional documentation and portfolio development, allowing me to reach a wider audience and pursue exhibition opportunities that require quality presentation. This support would grant me the time and space to commit fully to my growth as an artist, enabling me to produce a cohesive body of work that solidifies my artistic narrative and image.
