When it comes to painting, I always start with a recycled canvas. I let the brush and the spirit work its magic. I have been painting a theme lately that I can't escape called Curious Ethereals. This body of work explores what it feels like to live in a world that often seems unreal a kind of “clown world” where nothing quite makes sense, yet everything continues on. I love using vintage newspapers to find messages that align with civil rights and social change. I am an multi-media artist.
Where do you find inspiration?I studied art history to understand how artists before me documented the world around them. I see my work as part of that same lineage. I observe the contradictions, the absurdities, the quiet truths—and I translate them into these Curious Ethereals. They hover above us, watching, witnessing, perhaps even protecting our souls. My inspirations are vast and ever-growing. Artists like Hannah Höch, Jean-Michel Basquiat, the Byzantine Era, Andre Breton, Lucky Dean, Jams are all close to my soul.
What would you do with $25,000?Gosh, I don't know where to start. First of all, I have never done something like this before. I feel like this would definitely help our living situation in our tiny cabins in the Northwoods. I would also buy some long paint brushes and some bright colored paint, large canvas'. Making it this far in the contest already fills my cup, and I am so grateful for all the love and support I have received over the years. Because all of you have helped me follow my dreams which sets my heart free.
