Craig Stevens

Drawing forces us to become more aware, of a natural order, verging on a religious experience, like a prayer offered with a pencil.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

Figure drawing, or some iteration of figure drawing. Figure drawing has always been a catalyst for my creative process. Finding point to point relationships, underlying geometry, eliptical relationships are the starting point. Elaborating and exploring where they may lead are the fun part. Everything else exists in the human form if you know how to see.

Where do you find inspiration?

From art history and current artists, nature, just about anything can be inspirational, if you’re looking/seeing. Picasso is attributed with saying, “inspiration needs to find you working”. I couldn’t agree more. The more you do the more inspired you get. One of my mentors always said, “make an intelligent mess”. Even if you have a “block” just start working, trust what you know and work, it will eventually lead somewhere. It may not be where you expected, which inst necessarily a bad thing!

What would you do with $25,000?

Good question, there are several things I could do, pay down some debt, put it into an IRA, but art supplies, the list goes on. I am 65, been working a long time and would like to concentrate on art full time, finally. I would hope the monies would go to fuel this next step in my life long artist endeavors. This plus some other things I have in the works may be just enough help for me make the break from the 9-5 to a full time art practice.
