D Puglise

I create art to feel free--to turn my quiet longing into something beautiful, and to make the unseen parts of my heart gently visible.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

If I had to describe the kind of art I love creating, I’d say it’s the kind that feels alive--art that carries emotion in its texture and tells a story without having to explain itself. I’m drawn to hands-on, layered processes like printmaking and collage. I like when things aren’t perfect--when there’s a little grit, a little contrast--because that’s where the beauty feels most honest to me.

Where do you find inspiration?

I am fascinated by contrast: heaviness and lightness, decay and beauty, control and surrender. My process is both excavation and creation, pulling from lived experience while reaching toward something more expansive--like starlight reflected in moving water. In this space between extremes, I find truth, and in that truth, a kind of freedom. There is no rigid plan, no expectation--only an openness to what wants to emerge.

What would you do with $25,000?

I would use it to build a detached art studio on my property. I would love to open that space for private art classes--small groups where students can feel safe, encouraged, & free to express themselves without pressure. I’d want it to be a place where someone walks in unsure of themselves and leaves feeling a little more inspired, a little more capable, and maybe even a little more seen. That studio wouldn’t just be a dream space--it would be an extension of everything I believe art should be.
