I make handmade wooden maps from scrap wood that would just be tossed in the trash. Creating something from nothing is a wonderful feeling.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
Wood is something more rare in our universe than diamonds, and it gives me a satisfying feeling to work with it. It is molded to the artists vision and be become anything to reveal something that was always there waiting to be seen. I chose maps, because they themselves are symbols of exploration, memory, and identity. They represent places we’ve been, our ancestors urge to find new places, catalog them so we can share that experience with the next generation. They are places we dream about.
Where do you find inspiration?I’m inspired by the belief that everyone deserves a second chance. Taking a simple piece of wood and transforming it into something meaningful for someone else feels like a quiet kind of magic. Also, my love for history I can’t help but see forgotten scraps of wood as stories waiting to continue. Each wood once grew from a seed, shaped by years of life and time. It wasn’t meant to be discarded, but to be reimagined & turned into something that can be appreciated, long after it's life has ended
What would you do with $25,000?I would invest in the right tools to grow my passion for art. Right now, I create my pieces with only two older tools, a jigsaw and a sander. I would love the opportunity to develop my talent further and share as many creations as possible with the world. I want to build something meaningful for my newborn daughter, something she can be proud of. Creating a safe, stable environment while doing what I love would allow me to reach my full potential and build a future for her.
