I have always struggled to belong. I am adopted and have always felt like the ‘other’. Art helps me feel like I belong and can be accepted.

I enjoy creating art for other people as gifts. I enjoy surrealism as well as fantasy-style works of imagination. My style can vary between realistic and abstract. My main focus is in pen & ink illustration, and traditional style painting, blending a mix of acrylic and oil paints. While I do like the ease the digital medium offers, there is something sacred to me regarding getting my fingers dirty and coming away from a piece smudged and speckled. Like a duel with the canvas, only with a brush.
Where do you find inspiration?Nature itself is my greatest inspiration. An unfathomable well of overwhelming beauty to draw from. As such, many of my works contain natural themes and metaphors for the transience of the human experience. Music also plays a role, as when I create I love to have its accompaniment to meter my strokes whether by brush or pen, to the rhythm, breathing life into each piece. Personal experiences of pain; love, loss, joy, wonder, anxiety, doubt, and redemption also bleed in.
What would you do with $25,000?Were I to win the prize, I would seek to better myself and help some people who have shown great kindness towards me. I would use the money to help establish a more solid foundation for an entrepreneurial endeavor that has been a life love dream of mine. The establishment of a creative coalition of like minded individuals who would not only seek to bring beauty into this world, but who would use any proceeds to give back towards environmental and humanitarian causes.
