I create art to give my nightmares away; to give meaning to an imperfect world; to fulfill a promise to pay it forward.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
I have been asking that question for over 40 years. I like to create art that is realistic but still carries emotion. I may use oil paint in my process, but I create art with passion. If I had to pick one, my favorite is the Florida landscape.
Where do you find inspiration? We must lose ourselves to find ourselves. Silver Springs is the place I find solace and to renew my spirit. Nature, everyday objects, the sun on my skin, the wind, and especially the sky. I have jumped through a cloud in the Army; it changed my way of seeing the world.
What would you do with $25,000?In true Backus fashion and in the name of Uncle Reg, I would give it away. If I am ever known for my art, I would rather be known as a great humanitarian. Make a check for $12,500 to the A.E. "Bean" Backus Museum & Gallery, Fort Pierce, Florida. A second check $12,500 to River State College, Fort Pierce, Florida as an art scholarship in honor of Bean. Uncle Reg used to say it takes $10 for $1 to do any good.
