I create art by cutting fabric and tying knots to calm me, keep fabric out of the landfill, and create art that is fun to touch and look at.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

I enjoy making art from fabrics. I source discarded clothing and bedsheets to create sculptures that are made to touch and make the viewer think about fabric consumption. I have made 4 of these sculptures so far and I have more planned. I have made one from t-shirts, men’s clothes, women’s clothes, and yellow fabrics. My sculptures are made from donated fabrics in an effort to keep them out of landfills. I enjoy this art most for the look and feel thousands of strips of hanging fabric produces.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration in nature and a desire to make this world a better place. Discarded fabrics make up a large percentage of our landfills. My art aims to keep some of that waste out of the landfill and bring attention to this topic. We tend to discard our old clothes rather than finding new and creative ways to use them. My art challenges people to find new and possibly beautiful ways to use these discarded fabrics that would otherwise end up in landfills where they will take years to decay.

What would you do with $25,000?

I would start my life with my fiancée. Put some away for buying a home. Get a car that doesn’t break down regularly. It would give us a safety net for emergencies. It will help pay for our wedding and honeymoon. In general it would help us get the ball rolling on our lives and give us a head start. It would also help me fund future art projects, paying for the wood, paint and other materials that aren’t donated. Making more art will allow me to build my portfolio so I can apply to grad school.
