A deaf Mvskoke-Creek artist whose work tackles the subject of assimilation and the civilization process concerning the American Indian.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
In my experience, creative expression comes in many forms and it's constantly changing. The Dead Feather concept has explored various mediums of expression. From poetry, to paintings, to masks and short films intended to honor various Mvskoke-Creek deities and monsters that have been eradicated due to the civilization process, to dolls used to educate the observer in Mvskoke-Creek folklore and language, to music, currently, I would say my favorite type of art is creating music.
Where do you find inspiration?I find most of my inspiration comes from my desire to explore my cultural history and the spiritual aspects surrounding my indigenous background. Being deaf also has its part in inspiring me to create something bigger than myself. As a Paraprofessional who also works at an elementary school, I try to use that opportunity to educate our young scholars in Native American, US and Oklahoma history with my art, when given a chance.
What would you do with $25,000?My last project was a studio album (audio sculpture) with a local studio. I have four more volumes to add to the album/project. The resources would probably go to finish the next volume. I would probably use some of the resources to make a music video or two to continue promoting my "audio sculpture". If I can't find the means to continue with finishing the music project, I may start a series of color-field paintings based on Mvskoke-Creek colors. I may attempt to get my play started. We'll see.
