My practice is rooted in the urgent, uncompromising necessity of distillation. The canvas is the only place I can control the volume.

I work in large-scale abstract geometric expressionism not as an exercise in formal minimalism, but as an act of visual noise-cancellation. I work in large scale abstract geometric expressionism because it is a survival mechanism. The process of creation is an intensely private, physical battle to silence the internal clamor of joy, grief, exhaustion, and obsession. Within the sanctuary of the studio, I use sound (music) to drown out the world until I can hear exactly what the canvas demands.
Where do you find inspiration? All my life I’ve lived and been between worlds whether we’re talking about culturally and the fact that I am from two cultures, whether it’s that I was raised in the south and scolded in the north whether it’s I come from a world class city but it’s still small and yet I’ve lived in seven countries I’ve always had to be between worlds that meant that I grew up, always trying to simplify and distill things down to a way that I could understand them. My inspiration is the noise in my own head.
What would you do with $25,000?I would use $5,000 to buy supplies for myself then split the $20,000 into 4 donations to art programs for children here in New Orleans that includes: - NOCCA: New Orleans Center for Creative Arts - The Roots of Music Program - NOVAC (New Orleans Video Access Center) Born Digital youth programs - Eternal Seeds emerging artist program I’ve been giving to these programs for decades as they’re right here in my own neighborhood in New Orleans.
