I create art as a way to connect cultural experiences and build dialogue around our shared humanity. My work invokes spiritual healing.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
My work is best described as Expressionism/Urban ---I'm deeply affected by the work of artists like Marc Chagall and Basquiat. I also want to explore work that captures scenes from the everyday lives of common people, in the spirit of Van Gogh. I practice my drawing skills by copying works by Da Vinci--so he is a muse and mentor, in absentia. This type of disciplined study allows me to maintain my fine art and traditional training; then I can freely explore a 'rogue' style, rich with symbolism.
Where do you find inspiration? My inspiration comes from the people I interact with in my daily life. But I also am very affected by world events and human conflict and suffering. As Nina Simone said, an artist can't help but reflect the times in which they live. I am a person of deep empathy and my work often mirrors that. I celebrate all cultures and strive to uplift people and their authentic experiences. I want to produce work that is not only aesthetically pleasing but inspires reflection and provocative conversation.
What would you do with $25,000?Buy a ton of art supplies! I have so many projects that I'm forced to hold off on creating because I can't afford new canvases, paints and brushes. I would invest in a really good camera to take professional quality pictures of my work to share and produce prints. I would also treat myself to an 'art tour'--a trip that would begin here with visits to museums and galleries in New York, Chicago, finishing with a visit to Paris or Italy. I could take a break from my work as a substitute teacher.
