I tell real stories through photos, capturing emotion, culture, and connection in a way people can feel and remember.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
Documentary and cultural photography. I've stood on powwow grounds capturing dancers mid-spin, regalia catching light in ways that stop you cold. I've done studio portraits where the whole session is just about honoring what someone is wearing and what it means. There's a responsibility in that kind of work. You're not just taking a photo, you're being trusted with identity, culture, and pride. That's the art I keep coming back to.
Where do you find inspiration? The intersection of land, culture, and people who show up fully for something. A powwow dancer in full regalia. My son on the soccer field. A long Sunday run through the Interior. Inspiration for me is always about presence...being somewhere real, with real stakes, and paying attention. Kamloops and the communities I work with keep handing me reasons to pick up a camera.
What would you do with $25,000?I'd reinvest it into the work. I run a media company in the BC Interior and I'm actively pursuing personal projects with intention of showcasing the culture, preserving the identity, and ride one frame at a time. The funding would go toward gear, travel, and time...specifically the time to take on projects that matter but don't always pay. Art that serves community shouldn't be a side project. This would make it the main one.
