I am an ecologist. I began my career telling stories of life but nowadays I feel more like a coroner. I express that angst through my art.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
Now there’s a question. My favorite art to make or experience is any art that refuses to be boring. I strive to make art that asks questions worth asking. If it leaves you feeling joyful, curious, enthralled, disturbed, or even confused, in essence, thinking, all the better.
Where do you find inspiration? My inspiration comes from a lifelong relationship with the natural world—first as a child finding refuge outdoors during an abusive childhood, and later through 35+ years of ecological research. Nature saved me then, and it continues to sustain me now. I want it to survive. I want people to love and respect it as deeply as I do. That is the core of my art, regardless of medium.
What would you do with $25,000?I would develop an online scientist–artist collective called The Emergency: a platform connecting scientists and artists to create bold, collaborative work that engages broad audiences with ecological crises in the Anthropocene. The site would host online, theme-based exhibitions, interviews, and interactive events while fundraising to support traveling in-person shows and community gatherings. And selfishly? $1,500 for a celebration with collaborators 😊
