I've been a portrait artist since 1985 when I was a sailor. I am now drawing "Bad Portraits" that set a low expectation but bring joy.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
I like art that is a direct interaction with people and portraits are as personal as I've ever felt. The human is right there with me and I draw, paint or sculpt. I see the person but more importantly I take in their vibe and surprise myself with what comes out. I painted my first oil portrait in 1985 but started younger creating copies of my baseball cards as a boy. I've been a street artist in America and Denmark. I build surfboards, play saxophone & paint houses for $.
Where do you find inspiration?Inspiration is an evolving thing that at times has been the adrenaline rush that comes with fear of failure with each portrait. I hope to please the subject but they don't always come out. I realize now that I usually express my art as something like Willumsen, Nolde, Benson, Rivera, Thiebaud and Coltrane. They inspire me but my art is my own, I can see the same vine throughout my lifes work. I just do Dirk and am happy when it makes others feel the same.
What would you do with $25,000?If I was awarded this $25k prize...it goes right into void of debt...and a new baseball cap.
