Dylan de Topeka (Bernard)

Art has been what’s given my life purpose. I use it to challenge boundaries/ideology, as well as understand and transform my trauma.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

I prefer digital art; with an emphasis on video art/experimental animation; however as the digital landscape has evolved I've moved more towards attempting to merge physical pieces with digital work; including sculpture mixed with electronics and animations to either play on top of/ or projected onto the piece.

Where do you find inspiration?

Initially I was inspired by art history, with movements like Mannerism, Baroque-era; and everything from Modernism to contemporary being especially important. Experimental film from the early 70's-2000's, especially Paul Sharitz and Chris Cunningham. 19th-20th century philosophy especially from Kierkegaard and Schopenhauer. Music and musicians especially "Death Grips", and "Clarence Clarity". Currently mathematics, niche scientific studies, and everday life surve as my biggest inspiration.

What would you do with $25,000?

I would utilize it to clear my debts; even more importantly use it to help my parents retire; and with whatever remains invest it either into some kind of IRA or longterm investment which I could use to help fund future artistic projects; as well as use to help develop my city of Topeka which I've been interested in coming back to and helping give back to the communities here both that are in need as well as attempting to create a new culture here for the youth and those who long for more here.
