Earl Augustus Rhoads III

I paint skulls to mimic specific types of high grade turquoise. Giving vitality to something that was dead is very rewarding work.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

Painted skulls and canes which give the illusion of being inlaid with natural turquoise...the natural matrix of high end turquoise is what makes it a perfect imperfection...Wabi Sabi as they say in Japan.

Where do you find inspiration?

Natural pieces of high to gem grade turquoise are where I find my inspiration for my art and my daily life in general...I am known by silversmiths in Gallup as a turquoise lover with no equal...it is a part of my life that I can not be separated from. I see beauty in Turquoise that I see in every person I have ever met...the problem with most people is we don't see the beauty in ourselves so we fail to see it in others...turquoise reminds me that we are all perfect imperfections...Wabi Sabi.

What would you do with $25,000?

After taxes, I would use the money to commission and allow an up and coming Navajo Silversmith to make a piece of jewelery that will bring him some much deserved attention in the world of Native American Jewelry and Silversmithing...there are many artists who get no accolades for what is otherwise very brilliant silversmithing and jewelry work.
