Edgar Medina

Painting carries what words cannot. Color holds memory, resilience, and the weight of overcoming. It is how I make sense of my life.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

Large-scale abstract. Work that fills a room and changes the air in it. I build paintings through layers, instinct, and repetition — bold forms, restrained palettes, raw texture. Each piece carries the tension of a life lived between worlds. Mexican-born. Houston studio. 17 years of showing up. My work lives in the JW Marriott, Texas Children's Hospital, and private collections across the country. It was never small. It was never meant to be.

Where do you find inspiration?

In the distance between where I came from and where I am. Born in Mexico, built a life from nothing in this country, and became an American citizen in 2026. Every painting carries that journey. I travel the world searching for it — Paris, Rome, cities that move me — and bring those memories back to the studio. Inspiration is not a moment. It is 17 years of paying attention to what stays with you after everything else fades.

What would you do with $25,000?

Expand my Houston studio. Right now the space limits the scale. With $25,000 I build the room the work deserves — larger canvases, better infrastructure, space to take on commissions I have had to turn down. But the real dream is bigger. A small warehouse. A program where artists swap studios across the world — bringing their perspective into my space, me carrying mine into theirs. I came to this country with nothing. This would let me do it at a scale that matters.
