Emily Heilmann

Everyone is like clay. Moldable, influenced, but variable. Ceramics is more than just sculpture, but an expressive form of non conformity.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

My favorite art form is definitely ceramics. Growing up I always loved creating things, especially with my hands. While I enjoy other art forms like photography, drawing, painting, and sculpture, my love for ceramics has developed as I have gone through life so far. It allows me to create in so many different ways, as I can throw on the wheel, hand build, and also incorporate glazing into the same project. It’s such a versatile form of art, and also allows endless interpretation for each piece.

Where do you find inspiration?

My main area of inspiration is the world around me. Nature plays a huge role in this. The world is such a beautiful yet fragile place, and there are infinite ways to be inspired by my surroundings. The astounding beauty of everything around me encourages me to continue exploring and creating, and I think that’s amazing.

What would you do with $25,000?

If I were to win the $25,000, the main thing I would do with the money is pay for my education. I have been lucky enough to go to college, and plan to continue on to go to grad school for occupational therapy. I want to help people, and it would be amazing to be able to do that after completing all of my schooling. I would also like to buy myself a pottery wheel and kiln so that I would be able to continue creating art from wherever I am as my life continues. This would be an absolute honor.
