Erika Mendez

Since I was about 14 years old, art has served as a coping mechanism. I could not survive w/o some sort of artistic outlet in my life.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

I've experimented w/acrylics , watercolour, pastels, charcoal, crafting (ex. costume jewelry making & beading/card making/book markers), to creating the logos of a couple of online stores I had for awhile, and amateur photography. I love creating Art for the sake of creating, not being under deadlines, just being free. Recently, I've purposely set aside Sundays as my "Bob Ross Sunday". I sit by the creek, listen to water and paint "happy little trees" in my miniature watercolour book & BREATHE.

Where do you find inspiration?

In everything... LITERALLY... From a beautiful sunset, a church, to a wine label, to an ad in a magazine, to random everyday labels, like the Morton Salt label (my favourite since I was a kid), a treeline in the forest to water in a creek, to everyday objects/people when the light hits them "just right", a weathered face or a fashion look, to the art of other people, and their way of viewing the world via their art, or books/literature/music.

What would you do with $25,000?

Hmmm, after taxes, that would leave me about $17,500 net? So, I would give $5500 to our local food bank, which has seen an even greater need from our local community for food assistance here in rural Oregon, due to the drastic economy changes. I would share $6000 with my family, and keep $6000 toward getting the roof done on my small little home.
