My work is rooted in exploring and healing from traumatic experiences while reclaiming my own power as a voice for the oppressed and abused.

My paintings are abstract fields of color slowly layered up to create texture and movement. My work, though wordless, is centered on telling stories of trauma, escape, and recovery. As part of my next project, A Genocide of Women, I’ll be adding sculptures as a new component of storytelling.
Where do you find inspiration? My inspiration comes from survival from a domestic violence relationship that included being raped and nearly murdered by my abuser. Painting helps me deal with what I’ve survived in a constructive manner, and working in abstraction, it allows me to also maintain some privacy as I accept and move on from my experiences. Moving forward, I would like to turn outward and work with survivors to tell their stories.
What would you do with $25,000?If I receive the $25,000 award, it would be transformative for my art practice. It would be the launchpad for pushing my work to its next stage of evolution while growing my creative expertise. I would immediately use $3500 to professionalize my studio for better functionality. The remainder of the funds would be used to advance my project, A Genocide of Women, forward. The People’s Artist grant would allow me to create freely without financial worry. Thank you for considering me for this award.
