Creating art lets me process my experiences. It’s the healthiest and most natural way to understand myself. I love art, it’s why I’m alive.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
I love painting portraits. Self portraits are really special to me because they help me to uncover my mood while creating a piece. I love that painting can be a tool for self reflection. I can also find some relief from past traumas in the physical creative process, focusing on myself as the subject helps me cope with life, I also find repetition very soothing for PTSD.
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration in my feelings. Sometimes I find external inspiration when I see colors that look good together I will take a picture and maybe try to recreate them. But I am mostly inspired by understanding my feelings and identity. I am Sudanese-American and these cultures mean a lot to me, sometimes it can be difficult for me to process these parts of my life. Making art has always helped me to create a space where my cultural, emotional, psychological and spiritual worlds can be expressed
What would you do with $25,000?To be honest I would keep making my art and invest some of it in my career. Then I would help pay off some family debt, and the rest would be donated to help people in Sudan.
