My favorite art is the visual preservation of our traditions. Having been a dancer for 20 years, I have a deep, personal connection to the movement and the drum. My art focuses on capturing those fleeting, powerful moments within our ceremonies that words often fail to describe. I love creating images that reflect the pride and discipline of our culture, showing the world that our roots are not just a part of history, but a vibrant and essential part of our present.
Where do you find inspiration?My inspiration is born from the heartbeat of the community. I find it in the collective energy of a dance circle and the dedication of families who show up to keep our traditions alive. I am especially inspired by the "inside-out" perspective—being a participant in the culture allows me to see the subtle, soulful details that an outsider might miss. Every time I see a young person find strength in their heritage, I am reminded of why this creative work is so vital.
What would you do with $25,000?These funds would be a gift to the future of our cultural group. I would use them to provide traditional instruments, such as the huehuetl, and resources for the youth in Ximalxochitl. My goal is to remove any financial barriers for families who want their children to learn these traditions. I would also work on a community archive project to professionally document our ceremonies and stories, ensuring that the knowledge of our elders is preserved for the generations yet to come.
