Quarter-Finalist

Fiona Connor

I love the catharsis that comes with art. I like to work through things with it, to understand myself better, and (ideally) BE understood.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

I truly love everything. Anything and everything that satisfies that constant creative hunger, I just love doing. Whether it's more traditional fine art (acrylic, charcoal, and ink are a few of my favorite mediums there), photography, writing (plays and poetry), acting, or fiber art, I'm fascinated. I've also been drawn more and more to experimenting with purposeful messiness in recent years, which---given the rigid little perfectionist I used to be---I've found enormously freeing.

Where do you find inspiration?

Like most everybody I suppose, I find inspiration in the work of others. Music, literature, museums---all essential when I'm in the middle of a block (and at all other times as well, of course). I also find a ton of inspiration in particular places (I am constantly creating work about Los Angeles, a city I'm in passionate love with), people, my childhood (hippie, bizarre, lots of absurd material like people living in chicken coops and Pocket Man), and other little bits and bobs that catch at me.

What would you do with $25,000?

Make more art!! Pay the rent, and make more art, experiment with new things and new artistic possibilities. Distribute some to a couple artist friends, and everything else can wait a bit.
