Visual art has always been a portal for me to see things in a new light, an offering for others to experience life from a new lens.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
I love photography as a medium, and creating images that make the viewer experience another person or moment with me. My images are a thread of connection, with my subjects typically being people of African descent as my desire to create stemmed from wanting to see people from a background like mine captured in a way I rarely see, one that goes beyond a photograph to create a world that reflects my lived experiences while stimultaneously reflecting a world I desire.
Where do you find inspiration?I take a lot of inspiration from music, and the works of other artists. The way I choose my colors typically stems from art pieces I see, or feelings I get from other bodies of work. I sometimes have precedents before going into shoots, but often let moments with people craft stories of their own.
What would you do with $25,000?I would use it to fund a project in Uganda photographing my memories growing up in Kampala in an editorial light. I’d also use it to host a free workshop series for young people looking to get into photography and invest back into my photography practice.
