George Penaloza

I make art to express what a positive place the world could be for all living things. Creating art drives my imagination to the impossible.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

I like to push the limits of my imagination, so I find clay especially rewarding to work with. It can be so easily molded into the various visions I come up with when considering how to go about expressing attitudes, ideas and societal concerns. Clay sculpture takes on a life of its own, organically.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration in popular culture, animation and the animal world. I look at how popular culture has inspired other artists throughout time and then apply my interpretations of their processes to my work, which is a bit surreal but accessible. Animation works like this in popular culture, often anthropomorphizing animals, machines and objects to have human characteristics, dreams and ambitions. I like exploring how all of these aspects and ideas overlap and tie into each other.

What would you do with $25,000?

I'd like to contribute to funding a local art program here in Tucson, Arizona designed for kids who suffer from chronic illness.
