Connect What is your favorite type of art to create?

The kind that reaches right into my chest cavity and excavates whatever happens to be in there that day. Mainly in the form of sculptural abstraction using acrylic heavy texture, sometimes in the form of music; always in the truest fashion. I’m deeply honest with the canvas, some of the pieces know me better than I know myself. I love the process of unveiling all the layers (of self and ‘other’) as I continue to live and work with a piece. Art that channels through me will always be my favorite.

Where do you find inspiration?

It’s perhaps derivative and cliché, but I am very much inspired by everything. Be it a random dream (New Years Eve’s concept was fully realized from a dream on said night), a forgotten artist whose work has recently been unearthed, or a song I can’t get out of my head. Living artists inspire me, dead artists inspire me, even the mailman inspires me! It’s a blessing and a curse being so hyperaware all the time, but I choose to look at it as the former because I’d be a terrible artist otherwise.

What would you do with $25,000?

I’d invest every cent back into building Studio Sapien into what I’ve always aspired for it to be. An independent, free-flowing, community-based celebration of human art. $25,000 would not only help me build what I’ve always dreamed of; but would secure me to fully dedicate the next year of my life to my practice, my mission of reviving human art to the public, and most importantly, creating an art collective that spreads the much needed love via art that we so desperately in these trying times.
