Identity is a space of freedom. I love to create art as a way to explore my identity and the world around me.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
My favorite types of art to create are sculptures and abundant installation works that merge a number of different types of media together in constructed spaces. I also love anything that involves mixed media. My work asks: how is black female identity constructed? What are its signs, symbols, icons, and archetypes? I create imagined worlds through merged media, photography, video, film, sculpture, installation, and performance. I use merged media to create new narratives.
Where do you find inspiration?I find Inspiration in the world around me, the women in my life and those I’m inspired by - my personal icons, my internal world, my history and memory-- my own stories—for
reflection. I am interested in the personal as political while unraveling the complexities of being a woman. A woman’s perspective A woman’s archive A woman’s collection of things , my things … that hold meaning to her or me My archive My perspective
What would you do with $25,000?I would use the $25,000 to move my sculptural works into full production by collaborating with fabricators and accessing resources I haven’t been able to so far in my process. My work reimagines objects to explore personal memory through transformation and identity. This funding would allow me to fully realize my vision sculpturally and produce work at the scale and quality it requires with new materials.
