I enjoy developing work with layers that invite the viewer to excavate the familiar and unfamiliar images within. I use imagery and text to capture a memory, time, or feeling. I enjoy mixed media, oils, enamel, embroidery, and sculpture. Taking the work off the cavas creating immersive installations that invite the viewer to partake in a game of make believe. Creation=play; play=creation.
Where do you find inspiration?I look at the world with wonder and curiosity. An old toy has a story to tell, it whispers it’s history. Ephemera from the 1920’s is a treasure trove of font and graphic design. The quiet natural world and the soft subtle sounds of the Mississippi. Ghosts of ragtime and jazz musicians traveling by riverboat. Inspiration, the old car I drive, a scratched up record, a photo that captures a memory or place, lost and altered by time without questions of validity. Items that show wear appeal to me.
What would you do with $25,000?I am an art educator, next year marks my 20th year. I teach 6-8th grade artists and am an adjunct professor. I am an artist. I have been fortunate to have local art exhibitions and installed a temporary mural at our local museum. With 25,000 I would love to peruse a MFA. I would love to study art abroad to build a better understanding of the world and connect with others.
